Evacuation Of Retained Products Of Conception (ERPC)

The ERPC is a procedure that involves the widening of the cervix, and later an instrument is attached to the uterine walls for suction. The uterine lining and any other tissues, which look abnormal inside the uterus are removed and may be sent to a laboratory for pathology tests.

General Risks of the Procedure

a) The risk of chest infection. This risk is due to a collapse in the small area of the lungs. The treatment requires antibiotics and physiotherapy.

b) Pain and swellings on the legs. This risk is due to clots in the leg that is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). In rare cases, part of the clot may break off and move to the lungs, which can be fatal.

c) A heart attack. This risk is due to the strain on the heart. It may lead to a stroke.

d) Wound and chest infection, heart and lung problems, and blood clots in the veins. This risk is higher in obese people, and in smokers.

e) In very rare cases, death.

Risks and Complications of the Procedure

a) Tearing or damage to the cervix

b) Damage to the uterus. This complication may be due to the perforation and bowel damage. For treatment, further surgery should be done to show a possibility of bowel resection and may include a colostomy.

c) There is a possibility of damage to blood vessels and bladder. This complication requires further surgery, which includes laparoscopy, hysterectomy, laparotomy, and a prolonged hospital stay.

d) Severe bleeding from the uterus (hemorrhage). This complication requires a blood transfusion, and in rare times removal of the uterus.

e) The possibility of incomplete removal of tissue from the uterus. This treatment requires surgery for removal.

f) An Infection in the uterus and tubes. This complication requires antibiotics

g) Removal of the endometrium (lining of the womb). This risk can result in scarring the inside of the uterus and may cause difficulty in future fertility.
